What can your lawyer do during the Stay-at-Home order?

The Kansas Supreme Court, along with Governor Kelly, essentially shut down the court systems in Kansas for the next few weeks. Judges may allow hearings for emergencies, but the definition of the word "emergency" is pretty narrow. Judges will set bond for recently arrested people in criminal cases. But they will not set hearing dates for parenting time issues, child support non-payment, possession of homes or vehicles, or many other issues that commonly arise when people divorce or separate. I can meet with you, get your information, prepare documents and even file documents, but getting a court order in a divorce or custody case will just have to wait until the Courts either open up or figure out how to do video or telephone hearings. Judges are approving agreed orders, but even that is taking longer than normal due to reductions in force in the Court Clerks' Offices. Please have patience as everyone figures out how to deal with these most unique times.

Be careful and stay safe.
